Banyan Tree Seals

Jet lag is a b*tch.

This morning I woke up at three. Not a groggy, “where am I?” dozing, snoozy feeling… but a “yep, I’m up! What are we doing today?” kind of awake.

I’ve done everything right, slept at the right times, eaten at the right times, but my body clock is just not having it. My mind is still in London.

Anyway, I’ll keep trying. I’m sure it’ll fall into place soon enough.

Today we did very, very little.

I would love to tell you that today we explored the length and breadth of Phuket, worshipped in temples, swung through jungles and generally made the most of being on such an incredible island.

But that would be a whopping great lie.

In fact we hardly left the comfort of our room. We swam and lounged like lizards with our noses stuck firmly in our books.

At lunch time we strapped on the GoPro and went for a little roll around the hotel.

I stole a flower for Milly’s golden locks.

And peddled off for a little mid-day adventure.

If you ride right to the edge of the resort, you’ll run into Som.

It’s Som’s job to make sure you cross the road safely. He takes his role very seriously indeed.

Which is fine by me because he’s lovely!

We went right back to our favourite little lunch spot on the beach and ordered up a storm.

Seafood seafood by the sea shore!

Before lazily riding back home with a very welcome cool breeze on our backs.

We spent the rest of the afternoon pretending to be trained seals.

(The SeaWorld kind, not the US Navy kind.)

Nibbling fresh fruit, guzzling chilled water & flipping through our books.

I’m reading Gone Girl and it’s just so good I don’t even want to put it down to eat meals! I’m worried I’ll miss something juicy, which is of course ridiculous… it’s a book.

It’s such a great feeling though, to be totally engrossed in a novel. It feels so indulgent!

It was the last book on the shelf at a pitiful WH Smiths in the airport, so I didn’t expect much. Now I’ve bullied Milly into reading it too so we can discuss it. I can’t wait for her to catch up!

Once the sun set we headed up to a bar called 360 in the mountains nearby.

It boasts the best view of the surrounding area & some pretty moreish cocktails, too.

We sat and chatted, occasionally interrupted by the arrival of new cocktails or the piercing buzz of a mosquito needing to be slapped away.

It soon became apparent that however much citronella oil we slathered ourselves in, we were just too delicious for the mozzies to resist.

Keen to keep our blood to ourselves, we beat a hasty retreat and headed back to the hotel for supper.

We shared a big, fat ocean lobster and a Wagyu steak.

The ultimate surf ‘n’ turf.

It feels naughty to be eating chips in Thailand… but we’ll make up for it with some proper local stuff tomorrow, I promise.
