Eco Hotel, Tulum

When we booked our winter jaunt to Tulum, it didn’t actually occur to me that it would also be winter in Mexico.

I thought the temps stayed pretty roasting all year round, but that’s not the case.

In January it sticks at around 28-30C, is always breezy and can even get a little chilly on occasion. I’m usually a “the hotter the better!” sort of girl, but in fact this unexpected climate suited me down to the ground.

We never got too hot & sticky, the sea was wavy and much more fun to play in, and best of all… not a single mosquito! For the first time in my life I did not get bitten. (As someone who turns into a swollen, itchy tomato at the first sight of a bite, I can’t tell you how wonderful this was.)

This was especially good news for life in our Azulik tree house.

We dragged our sheets and blankets out to the balcony and slept under the stars, our hammock bed swaying in the wind.

We woke to see the sun rise over the ocean, with the waves crashing beneath us.

The sky blazed in shades of orange and blue, we watched on spellbound.

I can safely say this is up there in the top 10 moments of my entire life so far.

I can’t remember ever feeling so utterly awed by a situation.

Once the sun had climbed up to its morning perch, we dressed and strolled off in search of breakfast.

Strolling a few meters along the coast, back to Zamas.

Where they really nail their coffee!

After breakfast we took a little stroll through some of Tulum’s little boutiques.

But soon found ourselves longing for the sea once more.

Returning to our driftwood ocean balcony.

We dropped off our shopping bags, stripped off and made for the beach.

I couldn’t resist swimming out for a shot of the hotel from the sea.

Like something out of Waterworld!

After a day playing in the surf, we made for the spa.

Stretching out on cool cotton sheets, laid over squishy beds, teetering over the sea, on a lush clifftop.

We dozed while masseuses slathered us in oil and rubbed even the slightest bit of tension away.

Harmonizing, balancing, relaxing us to within an inch of our lives.

Upon our return to the treehouse, we buried ourselves in our books and saw out the rest of the afternoon immersed in them.

After sunset the hotel pathways are lit by glowing golden globes.

Crickets chirp their evensong and the place feels even more magical than ever.

We rode our bikes along the coast and ended up having a very disappointing, truly unpleasant dinner at El Tabano. One to avoid if you’re in town.

Determined not to let it ruin our final evening, we took a late night stroll along the beach.

Dipped our feet in the gentle evening waves and counted stars as they came alive in the night sky.

Grinning from ear to ear, sore from laughing and filled with joy we finally fell into bed.

Waking the next day for one final sunrise over the ocean…

A different masterpiece each day, you could spend a lifetime staring at this view and never see the same one twice.

Something I’m quite sure I would never, ever tire of.

I thoroughly recommend a stay at Azulik. Try and book a “Sky Villa” if you can and don’t expect 5* luxury. It’s very rustic, and that’s half the charm!

Tulum was heaven and I’m already dreaming of my return.

(In fact I’m currently trying to convince my boyfriend that we should give up everything to move out and start a beach bar! He’s not so sure, so I think a little trip out to convince him is in order, don’t you?)
