Fireworks at Versailles

We spent a long and lazy afternoon in the palace gardens.

Having laid on a picnic spread that Marie Antoinette herself would have been proud of, we munched, sipped, paddled and snoozed.

Giggling families and snuggling couples rowed by and we all merrily shouted “bonjour!” to each other.

Necklaces by Silver May

We delighted at the changing sky above. The sun would give way to furious looking, rain fattened clouds…

…before winning through and baking us once again.

The light danced on the water and the breeze rustled through the trees.

As the sun drifted closer to the horizon, we packed up our hamper and scurried upto the palace.

The light made the golden railings glow like Heaven’s gates.

We padded up cool, marble stairs into sumptuously decorated rooms.

Here, beneath the painted ceilings, we were treated to opera, ballet & puppetry.

We watched on, utterly spellbound.

With the voice of an angel she filled the room with her melody. The sound bounced and danced from the walls and pillars, filling her audience’s hearts with music.

The sort that you feel right down to your toes.

Even the stone hearted amongst us couldn’t help but watch and rejoice.

As each act finished we were guided through to the next room, each more richly ornate than the last.

The setting sun poured in through the windows, making the chandeliers glow and illuminating the spectacular floor beneath our feet.

Having gorged ourselves on the performances, we made our way to the gardens.

Fountains erupted and put on a serene, watery show for the excited crowd.

We wound our way through mazes and along never-ending paths, which would suddenly reveal a new secret in the form of a fountain or unseen sculpture.

Hidden speakers filled the gardens with classical music, making it all feel a little like a dream.

Then, when night began to fall, the real fun started!

Balls of flames shot into the sky.

The pillars of light warming the cheeks those nearby, taking the chill off the evening air.

And then finally, in the middle of the night, the fireworks boomed into life.

Hissing, fizzling, crackling and glittering their way across the inky black sky.

A truly unforgettable and deliciously romantic evening.

It happens every summer, so I highly recommend a visit next year!
