Lily’s First Birthday

This weekend we celebrated a pretty momentous milestone.

One that felt a long, long way off this time last year.

First Birthdays seem to be a bit of a rollercoaster of emotions for mums, there’s pride and relief at having gotten through the baby stage, tinged with heartache and the sad realisation that you’ve gotten through the baby stage!

To be perfectly honest I don’t feel too sorry about leaving the baby stage behind and charging full speed into toddlerhood, I love watching Lily grow and change into this fierce, busy, generous and determined little lady. She chatters away from dawn ’til dusk, wants to do everything herself and nothing, nothing fills my heart with joy like the sound of her giggling.

Ask me again in 6months how I feel about toddlerhood, but for now I’m excited for this new chapter!

To celebrate her first ever birthday, I went back to my own childhood. What did I love best? A birthday tea and one of mum’s special cakes. My brother, a June baby, always had his in the garden, while mine were always inside, hiding from the February rain. Lucky Lily doesn’t have that problem out here!

So in the morning we swam, after lunch we went to music class, and then while she was snoozing I set up a little garden picnic.

With a few of her favourite things.

I know what you’re thinking.

“That looks a very grown up cake for a one year old…”

Just wait!

A little thank you to everyone who helped me choose the flower arrangements on Instagram! The jam jars were perfect.

I just can’t get enough of the Peter Rabbit linens!

I think it’s pretty safe to say that the Birthday Girl was pleased…

There was singing.

Tea.

More singing.

Cake!

My rainbow surprise birthday cake, no less.

I would request the same one every year from my mum! Let me know if you’d like the recipe.

It certainly went down well over here!

We had pressies.

Followed by more tea, more cake, and more singing.

We couldn’t have asked for a better day.

I’m so incredibly grateful that this funny little girl chose us. Seeing the world afresh through her eyes has been my greatest adventure, and I can’t wait for many, many more years of tea, cake and singing!
