There’s something strange going on in Shoreditch.

Ok, that’s hardly news.

But in the depths of Shoreditch Town Hall there’s something even stranger than usual & something ever so slightly magical happening.

Phillip Pullman’s versions of Grimm’s classic fairytales have taken on a life of their own.

You walk through the crumbling corridors, littered with notes and snippets of stories, deep underground.

And find yourself falling into rooms, where the stage is set and waiting to come to life.

You take your seat.

And the play erupts around you.

At the end of each story the lights flare and the characters chase you on to the next room where they transform into new characters.

In between the rooms there are glimpses of familiar fairytale talismans.

And a few that aren’t quite so familiar.

Once the plays are finished you’re left to wander all alone.

It’s well worth a nose around. The sets are so beautifully crafted, it’s gratifying to be able to appreciate them without the distraction of players.

I was particularly impressed by the lighting in all of the rooms.

This room gives me the shivers. You have to walk across gravel to get to the well, but as you do the crunch underfoot is deafening.

The sound reverberates around the room and you feel the noise of each step in your chest, no matter how lightly you tread.

Delightfully horrid!

The room of ticking clocks was significantly more relaxing.

We took our time down in the cellar, soaking up every drop of magic.

We were very grateful to have been invited and loved the evening. I have been recommending it all over town.

The experience is intended for adults and children, but personally it would have scared the absolute life out of me as a child. I’d only recommend taking teens or particularly brave littles.

You can book tickets here and remember to wear something warm, it’s cold and creepy down there!
