Kamala Night Market

So we were right when we said it looked like they were setting up a local market yesterday.

It’s actually the daddy of all the local night markets.

We jumped into a tuk-tuk and headed down to get a slice (or two) of the action.

We skipped the dubious fake handbag, Nike trainer, laser pen side of the market and went right for the food.

Table after table of delicious looking (mostly fried) things spread out before us.

Stall holders shouted their wares and Thai pop music mingled with the chaos of sounds.

The air smelt of sugar, coconut oil, pork fat, fish sauce & chilli.

Every other store sells bags-o-things.

Noodles, salads, soups. All tied up like goldfish at a fair.

This is fast food, done properly.

The biggest crowds of locals surrounded the sushi stalls.

Something we gave a wide birth. Even night times are pretty hot here & we didn’t fancy sushi that had been sitting out in the warm all evening.

Pretty though…

Angry Birds fish stick, anyone?

This guy sells the best chicken satay on the block.

We stocked up.

On the fruit stands, skilled women slice ‘n’ dice pineapples into edible works of art.

Wouldn’t it be great if we had something like this back home?

Just pop down to the corner for something fresh, delicious & unbelievably cheap?

Having bought bags & bags of fish, meat, noodles & unidentified savoury things, we decided we should probably pick up some pudding.

Pancakes with banana & condensed milk were the obvious choice and we delighted in watching her make them.

The market closed earlier than we expected. Soon people were packing up their carts and heading home, leaving us with the stragglers in the dark.

We hoiked up our bags of goodies and went home in our noisy, flashing, disco tuk tuk. Singing along to Don McLean’s “American Pie” as we went.

Home at last we spread our haul out and enjoyed a bed picnic in front of “About Time“, which is one of the most moving, brilliant films I’ve seen! Honestly, you have to watch it… but make sure you’ve got a few tissues at the ready. It’ll melt even the coldest of hearts & I’m a sap at the best of times!
