Venice, Los Angeles

Venice has been whispering to me since I arrived in LA.

First it was all about the beach and the ocean… then I heard about the yellow bicycles that you can borrow for the day… then I heard about First Friday.

On the First Friday of every month all of the food trucks in the city congregate for one deliciously decadent evening of street feasting.

They all line up on Abbot Kinney & peddle their wares.

In the interest of building up a worthy hunger, we did our own pedalling first.

Before saying goodbye to the boardwalk & heading towards the distant aroma of LA’s finest food trucks.

Starting (as all good stories do) with lobster.

There were two types of lobster roll.

One had mayonnaise.

The other had mayonnaise and melted butter poured over the top.

I know you know which one I went for.

The result was deliciously rich and lobstery… but the bread was a bit too sweet and at $17 pretty darn expensive.

We moved on up the street past truck after truck, all trying to squeeze into the best spots.

New kid on the block “Street Kings” caught our eye next.

Mostly thanks to their outrageous offering of fried chicken with bacon & cheddar… in a doughnut.

If this isn’t what American junk food is all about, I just don’t know what is.

The sandwich was pretty good, I love the mixture of salty & sweet… but half is more than enough before you start to feel quite sick.

This is real Man vs Food stuff!

I’d heard about Kogi before so jumped in line before it even opened.

I wasn’t the only one.

We had short rib tacos & spicy pork tacos.

Both were excellent.

The perfect balance of spicy, sweet, sour, rich & fresh.

Followed by a kimchi quesadilla that quite honestly blew my mind it was so good!

I’m getting hungry just thinking about it.

One of my favourite things about First Friday is the spectrum of people who come to enjoy it.

People of all ages and backgrounds crowd together to enjoy great food from all around the world.

This does of course mean there are a few queues.

My advice is to get down there early, just as the sun is setting.

There are fewer people than there will be later at night when the food crazed hordes descend. And it’s beautiful…

We ended our story (as all good stories end) with more lobster.

And a few cocktails in one of the local bars.

Very full & very happy.

If you happen to be in town I highly recommend tracking down the Kogi truck, I could eat it all day every day and will be pleading with them to set up shop in London town sometime soon!
