This past weekend we had some of our favourite people come to stay.
Thomas and Julia stopped in on the way home from their Babymoon in Spain, to spend some time with us before she hunkers down to get ready for the arrival of their little one, and to celebrate Thomas’s birthday.
This past year he’s cultivated something of a green thumb, so chose a very fitting spot for his birthday lunch.
London was a balmy 30°c, so we found a breezy little spot in the greenhouse, surrounded by bougainvillea.
Perusing the menus while nibbling on homegrown snacks, surrounded by lupins and fragrant roses cut from the surrounding gardens.
Rose scented prosecco bubbled away in the boys’ glasses, while Julia and I sipped on iced lemonade.
We shared a table-full of seasonal treats.
Monkfish carpaccio with chilli, lemon, creme fraiche & wild fennel.
Fresh, light and as delicious as it is beautiful.
Marinated tomatoes, goat’s curd & basil.
Proving that things don’t have to be complicated to be perfectly wonderful.
Though at least one person was more interested in the chicken…
For dessert, we went traditional.
The whole place joined in for a little sing along, much to T’s delight.
Perhaps the surrounding tables were hoping for a slice of the action…
Even this little one was hoping for a bite of that lemon buttercream.
We’ll be in France this summer when she’s finally able to try some solids, and I for one cannot wait!
Where better than to begin your culinary adventures than in the French countryside?
We lingered a little while, catching up about old times and getting excited about those still to come.
Julia explained to Lily that she has a new best friend on the way…
…so now there’s one more of us who just can’t wait to meet her!
