I’m always amazed by how small New York seems.
You can pretty much walk anywhere you want to go, and doing so is actively encouraged.
Downtown this is especially helped by The Highline (a mile long park/walkway built up high on the old New York Central Railroad). There’s an entrance to the line just by Yudren’s flat so it’s the perfect place for a morning mooch and stroll to breakfast.
But you godda wrap up warm!
Breakfast was a big American Affair at Cookshop.
Huevos rancheros.
Fry up with cheddar grits… and my first ever American “biscuit”!
I’ve always been curious about what a biscuit is, in England it’s a cookie so was thrilled to see them on the menu.
This enormous beast arrived with jam and butter, so I slathered it on.
And got stuck in!
You’ve seen that look before, haven’t you?!
That’s my special, patented “oooffhhh is reary good” look.
My research led me to the conclusion that a biscuit is essentially what we call a scone, but with a slightly crispier outside.
Very good… but could do with some clotted cream and a pot of tea.
After breakfast we jumped back on The Highline and walked off a few calories.
I’m wearing the world’s warmest jacket. It’s from Toast but they sadly don’t sell them anymore, so have popped a few similar options below.

The best pants are no pants.
Leather ones come a close second.

The whole place is littered with art so there’s something to see around every corner.
We hopped off at 28th St and walked to the little cluster of galleries nearby.
Starting with Richard Serra at Gagosian.
Room after room of carefully stacked, vast, solid steel chunks. A memorial to sculptor Walter De Maria, one of Serra’s friends who died not long ago.
His work is all about how you interact with it and move between the pieces, like a maze.
“Go and get close. Check out the tiny details, but don’t touch the art, lady!”
Mary Boone’s gallery next.
A huge space drenched in light with the most amazing wooden beams.
My favourite though, was Rómulo Celdrán’s “Zoom and Macro” series at the Hasted Kraeutler gallery.
“I believe there is something magic in the world of scales. There is a kind of emotional memory that invites us to feel the relationship with the Macro objects as if it were a game.” Rómulo Celdrán
I desperately want this ice tray in my life.
Outside the sun graced us with her presence and zapped every cloud from the sky.
Stairway to heaven?
Oh, my mistake… just The Highline.
Oddly enough, one of my favourite things about New York is the light.
The sun shines brighter than in London and in this cold weather has a surreal effect on the landscape.
There is pretty much nothing I love more than one building reflecting onto another & sharing its warmth.
Isn’t it beautiful?
The wide streets and yellow school busses help too!
With well stretched legs, heads full of art and hearts full of light, we headed to Soho for lunch.
Where we rewarded ourselves with lobster rolls at Ed’s.
Ready for the money shot?
Reeeaaaddddyyyyy…
Boom!
Isn’t it a thing of beauty?
Go on, scroll up for one more peek.
Don’t you just want that all up in your grill, right now?
Yea, me too.
America, I love you.
(And Ed’s is going right to the top of my NYC map!)
