There’s a secret little beach on the East Side of Crete.
It’s tucked away on the peninsula of Spinalonga and you can only go for the morning or the afternoon.
It doesn’t exist in the middle of the day… well, not as we know it. You’ll see what I mean later.
If you drive out to the peninsula from Elounda you’ll cross a bridge & find yourself at the restaurant I wrote about yesterday.
Go early and stop in for some Greek yogurt, fruit & honey for breakfast.
Once you’ve paid the bill & said your thankyous, pop out back. You’ll find a beautiful mosaic from Ancient Greece. It’s so amazing the way history seems to pop up all around you on this island.
You’d stumble over it if you weren’t looking. Say your goodbyes & jump in the car. Turn right out of the carpark & drive deeper into the peninsula.
Along the road with the waves lapping against it.
And up into the hills along the cliff.
When you reach the end of the road, ditch the car. Pull on your walking shoes & head down towards the sea.
In just a few minutes you’ll stumble into paradise.
Your own private cove with crystal clear water & fish that swim around your toes.
Enjoy it!

But look out.
At exactly 11am the destroyers arrive.
You’ll spot them on the horizon & they signal the end of your beach as you know it.
Party boats bulging with tourists & drinkers.
The music will throb across the bay as little drunken ants crawl out of it and spread themselves over the landscape. So when you see them, pack up & head off. Don’t worry the secret beach will reappear at 4pm when it’ll be yours again.
We spent our last day sharing our little secret, before begrudgingly saying goodbye & flying back to England.
Goodbye sweet Crete, thank you for having us!
