Birthday Blues

Last night I popped out to celebrate one of my favourite people’s birthdays.

With bubbles in one fist and roses in the other, my fella & I marched off into the setting sun.

Sadly, the birthday boy is fiercely camera shy.

A camera may as well be a loaded weapon as far as he’s concerned, and as such they’re not allowed in the house.

So no party blogging for me.

But, you know me!

Could I resist the combination of a swishy new dress, a glistening evening and an Uber held up in traffic?

Of course I ruddy well couldn’t!

So, while it may not be the party post I’d have liked, I can at the very least share a style post with you.

You can’t beat a good maxi dress.

Flattering for every shape and size under the sun.

The right cut can lengthen your legs, skim your bottom, slim your torso, while enhancing your bust.

[iframe frameborder=”0″ height=”120px” scrolling=”no” src=”http://currentlyobsessed.me/api/v1/get_widget?wid=29&blog=The%2BLondoner&product_ids=n_11707714,n_12781330,n_12781314,n_11860724,n_12168631,n_12781358,n_12781322,n_12781394,n_12781318,n_11854576,n_12556831,n_12619142,n_11061372,n_11338346,n_9869938,n_9626558,n_8346134,n_9625822&rows=1&cols=5&brand=1&price=0&hover=1″ width=”600px”]

Less overtly sexy and a little more grown up than a mini.

A flowing skirt swishes past your bottom & legs, gently hinting at what lies beneath.

Obsessed with all things blue, I paired mine with a snazzy new number from Pocket Watch.

They’re a new British company and I can safely say I have never had more compliments on a watch!

I have a thing for large, almost masculine watches but I think the rose gold makes it firmly mine, rather than something I’ve borrowed from my chap.

The rest of my arm candy is from Baublebar.

[iframe frameborder=”0″ height=”120px” scrolling=”no” src=”http://currentlyobsessed.me/api/v1/get_widget?wid=29&blog=The%2BLondoner&product_ids=n_12783838,n_11087586,n_12783790,n_12783786,n_10795042&rows=1&cols=5&brand=0&price=0&hover=0″ width=”600px”]

After a little dancing, we did start to hope the car would turn up soon!

We discussed the pros & cons of cracking into the champagne… but decided against it.

I posted a snap of my ticker on Instagram. People immediately asked where it was from and when I shared the link, it came up with info on a little competition they’re running.

I know my readers tend to be a talented bunch, so I thought it might be right up your street!

Check it out, and if you win you have to promise to come back and tell me (and give me some tips!).

Hi Rosie. I know that you give advice in the comment section sometimes. To be honest I had always wondered who on earth would ask a stranger on the internet for advice – but here I am! You always seem to take the time to respond and I always admire your answers so you are actually the only one I can think of turning to!
    So here goes nothing!
The thing is that ive been with my fiance for 7 years. We were friends for ages and then fell in love and hes my best friend. Hes also GORGEOUS like an actual god in my eyes! Ok so he might have a little muffin top but Id still choose him over George Clooney any day!!
My problem is that Im not so gorgeous. My hair is frizzy and I have spots and Im starting to get wrinkles and I just seem to get fatter every day. Its making me hate myself and I keep trying to hide from him. I dont want him to see me naked or even think about having sex. He says he still fancies me loads and keeps trying to take my clothes off and seduce me but I cant let him see me. I know that hes going to leave me even though he says he wont. I just think I should call off the wedding now before he does.
Do you agree? Or do you have any advice on being confident and getting skinny?
I dont know who else to turn to.

    • Rosie

      Hi Anon,
First of all, I’m so sorry you’re having a rough time!
Secondly, congratulations on being in a relationship for seven YEARS and for getting engaged! That shows some serious commitment and relationship skillz!
Now, I know you’re not going to like this… but trust me it’s true.
99% of what you’re going through is in your head.
DO NOT BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU THINK! Especially when you’re feeling down, tired or hungry (especially hungry in my case!).
The amount of times I have looked at my boyfriend (and I’ve had a few of them) and thought “Jesus, why on earth is this guy with me?!” but what you have to remember is that he IS with you. This God-like creature you’ve managed to find has chosen you out of all the other mortals and decided to stick with you, not just for the last SEVEN years, but he has plans to for the rest of his life!
If you were trying to seduce him and tear his clothes off and he was pushing you away, then perhaps I would say there’s a much bigger problem going on here, but that’s not the case! He’s telling you you’re gorgeous, he’s telling you he wants you… believe him!
He’s a much more trust worthy source than the demons from the back of your mind telling you he’s lying.
This weekend, take an afternoon to yourself. Turn your bathroom into a spathroom! Pour yourself a really good bubble bath (use the best bubbles and use them generously!). Exfoliate, oil yourself up. Wash and brush your hair. Put on a little makeup, your favourite shoes and that dress that makes you feel like a pin-up girl, I know there’s one in there somewhere!
Have dinner with your man and then jump into bed! Dim the lights a bit, noone needs bright lights when they’re stripping off! And just enjoy each other. Forget that you think you’re a bit fat, just enjoy the moment and let it all go. Silence the doubts in your mind and only let the good ones shout!
Finally, have a good sleep and by the morning you’ll feel like a new woman and he’ll be happy as larry!
Confidence is all in your mind. Just trust the positive thoughts and remember that most of the negative ones are lies, and poisonous ones at that. Good thoughts breed good thoughts and negative ones do the same.
It sounds like you have a great chap. Don’t let doubt ruin it.
And certainly never dump someone just because you think they’re going to dump you! Noone wins in that situation.
Feel better pickle, I am always here for a chat if you need me!
      xxxx

I never comment on blog posts, but Rosie I LOVE that you have taken the time to write really good, solid advice and that you really seem to care about your readers.

Anon- I also hope you feel better soon!

    • Nai

Hi, I saw this and couldn’t help but reply. You’re not lacking in your appearance (I am sure you are beautiful), your problem is your confidence. It’s easy to feel insufficent in a society where people are so objectified in magasines etc. The best thing you can do is start to see your body as a tool, not just something that’s there to look pretty. Take up a sport and see yourself improve and your body do all kinds of things you never knew that it could and I promise that it will change your mentality and your confidence will rocket (not to mention, you will be losing weight from new sports). If you’re not feeling very sexy then perhaps go to a pole dance class or something, it is so fun and so good to step out of your comfort zone. Your fiance sounds like a keeper so don’t let him go x

    • Jane

Hey anon, Rose’s advice is great! You really need to take some time to make you feel better and focus on loving yourself.
But just imagine feeling as shitty as you do, thinking you’re ugly… and then hurting the man you love by leaving him! If you can’t feel gorgeous- and I’m sure you are- with a Greek God on your arm reassuring you that you are, try feeling gorgeous when you don’t have him there.
Don’t leave him for these reasons- you would be hurting him as well as you for something that is neither of your fault. Lord knows I find it hard to feel beautiful, but perhaps it’s something deeper than looking in the mirror? Don’t feel ashamed to talk to your friends/ a therapist about it, and try taking little steps to confidence like self affirmations and banishing these nasty thoughts.
You really are lovely, and it seems like he really can see past your ‘frizzy hair’ to the generous and caring girl you are. Remember that you can always change the way you look, but it would be a lot harder to win his trust back after dumping him for no reason. I hope you find the confidence you deserve, J x

    • Emily Kalbun

      Hi Anon,
I read this post and was so touched by your honesty and I know exactly how you feel because I am going through something equally hard because I am trying to loose weight. I am also in high school, an age where there is much stigma around not having the absolutely perfect body or legs or anything else. You are very lucky that you have such a fantastic person who is so mature and lovely and don’t feel bad just because you feel you are inferior. You are not!
If weight loss is your major issue then maybe a good thing to start would be to drink green tea. Lots and lots. I know because I lost fifteen pounds by drinking cups of green tea before each meal along with excersize and limiting my intake. That is honestly a great tactic. Furthermore, good way to easily loose weight is by building muscle, because you will burn fat without lifting a finger once you are done(since it eats up the calories). If you cant think of any, just take a looksi on pinterest. They have fabulous workouts on pinterest which I use myself and which have helped me quite a bit! I really hope you feel better soon and that someday you will feel happy and confident as you deserve to be!
      best wishes
      Emilyxxx

  • Hiya Rose. Really cute bracelets. Everyone is raving about Bauble Bar. I’m going to have to check it out!

On a side note…I totally understand the need to generate revenue from the blog (we all have to make a living!), but can I just be really honest and say the overload of ads on the site are very off putting? I’m finding it hard to focus on the content. :o( Just some friendly feedback from a regular reader.

    • Zoe

Try making a bloglovin account and reading it through there – its completely the same layout without the ads. Hope that helps!

      • Thanks Zoe, I use Bloglovin a lot. I must have gone to Rosie’s blog directly when I saw all the ads. Such a big difference viewing through Bloglovin!! Good advice. x
