Cookin' Up A (Snow) Storm

This isn't really a proper blog post, just a little note to let you know I haven't forgotten you!
I've spent the morning in the kitchen testing canapé recipes.
I'm trying to decide on three super easy, impressive little numbers that you can whip up in a flash and wow your guests with.

I'm pretty sure I have One & Two down but need your help with a third.
Any ideas on a delicious canapé that anyone can make?

    3. That was going to be my suggestion. So good! I made mini croque monsieurs one year and they were a hit. I assembled them in advance and baked them all off in the oven. I used brioche so it was extra buttery.

Deviled eggs with smoked salmon are also amazing.

    Rose,
I always make goats cheese and camarelised onions on toast... so easy... take a peice of bread and toast lightly, cut off the crusts and cut into 4 squares, either caramelise red onion with balsamic over a low heat or buy cameralised onion chutney (cheats method!). Cut up thin slices of goats cheese and sprinkle a tiny bit of fresh thyme on top. put under grill for 3 mins. They are delish!

Or... another stylish canape... buy a pack of sausages, a pack of ready made mash and an onion. Cut the onion into slices and fry until crispy. cook sausages and then cut into 4's. Place the mini sausage peice with a dollop of mash ontop and then a little sprinkle of crispy onion on top... voila... mini sasage and mash!

    Enjoy

Roasted figs with goat cheese and honey: super easy and ready in 10min!
Just cut the figs in halfs, put some goat cheese on top of each one and top with honey. Goes in the oven for a few minutes. If you wish you can make it even beter by adding some pesto (between figs and cheese) and some pinions.

I'm a huge fan of taking some orange zest, mixing it with some goat cheese, and stuffing dates with it. You can also take celery sticks, pipe a blue and cream cheese mixture down them, and dip the end in toasted nuts. Very delicious.

  37. Since it's Christmas you could get some cranberry bread from your local american store, slice it up and spread cream cheese with spring onions on each slice then sandwich together with a slice of smoked turkey in between.

Or you could whip up some parmesan shortbreads which are good as you can do them beforehand.

How about mini scotch quail eggs. These are really easy to make. I've put the recipe on my blog.

    Irrelevant comment/question:
I am currently living in NYC and need a hair cut. You seem like the girl to ask in terms of where will make my long curly locks the most fabulous. Suggestions appreciated.

Also- in terms of foodies- I suggest thinly sliced apples or pears (dip in lemon juice to keep colors fresh) as the base for sliders. Think pear slices with a dollop of goat cheese and capers or fresh mint or whatever else you fancy. Or apples with honey and parma. The world is your oyster.

    ReplyDelete
  39. three easy ones but very impressive:
    1. fill a mushroom cap with boursin or other soft cheese (goat with chives and garlic??) brush the cap with butter and bake at 350 F for 20 mins
    2. mix 1 egg with goat cheat, chives and salt. Put a dollop on a square wonton wrapper or filo (sold in most supermarkets) and wrap in a bundle, squeezing pointed tips and tie shut with a chive. Fry in a few inches of oil until golden and delicious like such http://www.lindentea.com/?p=1772
    3. rounds of soft cheese (goat, boursin, etc)in a small baking dish, add fresh basil and jarred tomato sauce. Bake for 20 mins. Brush baguette slices with garlic oil and toast. Put a healthy dollop on baguettes and serve!

For a dessert canape or just something cool you should try tuxedo strawberries. http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/tuxedo-strawberries (not my tumblr but gives you an idea of what they are). They're super easy and look amazing. I make them for Christmas but I'm in the Southern hemisphere so strawberries are a bit more common in December.

  46. I do these little egg puffs in muffin tins. So easy and you can customize them with different ingredients. I do mine with ham, cheese, egg and mustard to season. DELICIOUS!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Caprese Salad On-A-Stick!

You need: toothpicks, cherry tomatoes, fresh basil, good mozzarella cheese, balsamic vinegar (quality does not really matter because you will reduce it down to a syrup), cracked sea salt, and pepper.

Reduce the balsamic vinegar in a pan until thick and very viscous. Meanwhile, place a piece of mozzarella, a similar sized piece of basil, and half a cherry tomato on a toothpick. Continue assembling. =) The hardest part is now over. Now take the balsamic syrup, and drizzle over the caprese hors d'oeuvres. Top with fresh sea salt and pepper and you are done! No serious cooking required.

    P.S. I adore your blog!

  49. Mini Croque Monsiuers! They can be made and assembled in advance and cooked in the oven. I did them for a party last year and everyone loves melted cheese. Its basically cheating.

  56. Cheesecake truffle :)

    Ingredients:

1 package Philadelphia Cream Cheese 1/3 Less Fat
1 package (8 ounces) baking chocolate squares, semi-sweet (or candy melts)
1 cup graham cracker crumbs (doesn’t have to be graham, I used some other brand)
1/4 cup chopped pecans, finely chopped (I didn’t have pecans so I used Walnuts)
1/4 cup caramel sauce (or melted caramel squares)
    Directions:
    1. Combine the cream cheese with the graham cracker crumbs. Use a melon baller to scoop up 1 1/4″ sized balls to a wax-paper lined baking sheet. Repeat until you’ve scooped up all of the cream cheese. You should have about 15 balls. Freeze for 10-15 minutes.

    2. While the cheesecake balls are freezing, melt the chocolate according to package directions.

    3. Using 1 or 2 forks, dip each cheesecake ball into the melted chocolate. Let the excess chocolate drip away between the tines. Place the chocolate covered balls back on the wax paper on the baking sheet. Repeat for all cheesecake balls.

    4. Top each truffle with pecans. Drizzle caramel over each truffle. Refrigerate at least 1 hour before serving (up to overnight).

Bacon or prosciutto wrapped around 3 green beans(or a thin spear of pineapple or a large prawn. Spike in place with a toothpick. Pan fry until crispy.

Whip philadelphia cheese with sweet chilli sauce and coriander. Put into baking paper/piping bag. Pipe a rosette/blob onto a crisp cos lettuce leaf/slice of cucumber/cracker. Also delicious with shrimp.

Easy meatballs: Buy tasty italian sausages or chorizo (or sausages of your choice). Squeeze filling out of sausage skin. Roll filling into small balls. Pan fry and skewer with a toothpick -serve with relish or sauce of choice.

cut holoumi or saganaki cheese into pieces. Skewer each piece onto a stalk of rosemary. Pan fry until perfect, serve with a lemon wedge.

    It's that simple.
