I'm going to keep this one short & sweet.
Or short & smokey, as the case may be.
Yesterday, a shiny new restaurant in the heart of Soho opened its doors.
A tiny little place, in a tiny little street hosts what is in my opinion, the best barbecue kitchen in London.
Pitt Cue is the well loved street food wagon, grown up.
The love child of Jamie Berger, Tom Adams & one of the chaps behind Hawksmore & The Albion, this place has some seriously good breeding.
Hard Lemonade is my drink of choice, while my date went for the New York Sour.
Whatever you choose, get a Pickle Back!
A shot of bourbon chased with a shot of pickle juice… wrong in all the right ways.
The menu is what it should be, short, simple & meaty.
Choose between pork ribs, beef ribs, pulled pork, brisket & whack a few sides on.
(Sides include really sticky, spicy chicken wings so trust me, you're not going hungry.)
Un-believable.
Seriously meaty, chewy, flakey, juicy, sticky, sweet & salty.
Combined with pickled beets with chunks of ham hock, creamy mash & smoked baked beans.
Pitt Cue is the mothership for all salad dodgers.
I apologize for the picture quality, I literally snapped them, threw my camera to the side and got stuck in.
From then on my fingers were too sticky to even contemplate touching it again!
The restaurant itself only has room for 30, it's a bit like sitting in someone's kitchen at home.
Part of it's charm is having to scootch up to people you don't know & making friends with bbq smiles & hot-sauce fingers.
*No handshaking.
I was less so. In fact, I even ended up with bbq sauce in my eyebrows.
Southern dining, at its finest.

Of course, there are no reservations so you start upstairs in the bar.
Stick your name on the list for a table & get the cocktails in. Hard Lemonade is my drink of choice, while my date went for the New York Sour.

We tried everything.
For me, the stand out winners were the beef ribs. Un-believable.

My advice? Go with a date, rather than a group. Pitch up in the bar & the time will fly by.
This isn't like queueing in the cold, there's a list, it's civilised. I was less so. In fact, I even ended up with bbq sauce in my eyebrows.

ReplyDeleteThis place looks so cute! I love proper hands-on ribs dining once in a while haha.
ReplyDeleteOoohh looks yummy! My husband met the Pitt Cue guys in Kansas City last year and we went to see them on Sunday while they were prepping - they are lovely guys. So glad you enjoyed it and gave them a good review. Unfortunately I didn't get to eat while I was there as they were only prepping but we should be returning in a few weeks to get stuck in! :) x
ReplyDeleteOh my ! This looks heavenly. I really must drag one of and friends and try it out. Thanks for sharing.

I just discovered your blog, and I'm in love. I'm an American writer with plans to move to London later this year. I'm looking forward to taste-testing your recommendations then. x

ReplyDeleteIt looks so nice in there, love places like this that do things in their own different way!
ReplyDeleteThey're back! How exciting. I loved the wagon. This is excellent news...
ReplyDeleteThis is the second restaurant i have visited that you have recommended on your blog (the first being Yashin) and it was unbelievably good. As a Londoner born and bred myself there is no other blogger i would trust as much as you for restaurant recommendations!
ReplyDeleteKeep up the fantastic posts and go visit Meat Liquor if you havent already (welbeck street)!
If a restaurant review was ever going to convince me, this is it. 'Meaty' sounds right up my street, it's my birthday soon and this sounds ideal for my boyfriend and I. Dead hungry now

So very excited about havin a meat feast, c u all there tomorrow 9 ish all welcome
ReplyDeleteI went last night- it was really buzzing!! Although the queue outside was horrendous, people literally waiting for over 40 min. Best to go in twos, bigger groups, you'll be waiting outside for a while if you don't get there early! But it seems not to put people off... Food was delicious, though I was still repeating it 6 hours later. Very heavy food-but definitely tasty!!
ReplyDeleteAre these the main course portion sizes? They are tiny, they look like starters. I was really excited to hear about this place. Being from SA i do like my meat and will go all out for awesome Q. I think i may give these guys a miss due to the mean portion control.
ReplyDeleteHello!
DeleteThe portions are pretty big by British standards!
An American portion is enough to feed a small family over here!

Completely and utterly disappointed with my friend and I's experience at Pitt Cue today. We came on our lunch break, I have been previously so I understand the wait to be seated. However, there was hardly any customers - we were ignored as we walked in by the manager who was too busy practicing her frowning and complaining about customers than actually acknowledging and greeting her customers. Eventually a very friendly waiter did attend to us and managed to get us seated. After waiting 30 mins we were told our food with be another 15mins, which is understandable. The 15 minutes came and went, waiting a further 10 mins we asked the waiter to check on our food. He came back and told us it would be another 5 mins. We waited, and nothing came. We then started to realise that everyone else around us was waiting, and people nearly 4 orders behind us were only just being served. We eventually, after waiting an HOUR AND A HALF for food had to leave. I am shocked and appalled that a place with such a reputation is rife with bad management and poor communication. Also why is a place trading and providing a lunch service if they do not have the facilites to deal with the customers? No explanation was given, no real apology nor any form of compensation. I've never walked out of a restaurant in my life, a place I will not be returning to and would never recommend to any of my friends.
