Mishkin's

A few weeks ago I had a lean back, belly rubbing, groaningly good meal at Mishkin's, the Jewish diner in Soho.
The newest hot spot from the chaps behind Pulpo & Spuntino, some of my favourite central haunts.
The decor is what you wish real New York diners still looked like, redbrick walls, checkerboard floors, big leather booths and 1970s wallpaper in the loos.
In the evenings they turn the lights down & the music up.
It's busy, buzzy & de-licious.

We started with one of the specials, smoked salmon, capers & cucumber.
Exceptionally good salmon, served simply.

Next, we moved on to the salt beef bagel with parsley sauce.

I have to say, this was outstanding.
They get the bagels from my favourite place on brick lane, the beef was soft & juicy.
My date's favourite dish, by far.

The cod cheek popcorn with lime & jalapenos is the perfect mix of comfort, spice & citrus.
Like a sort of Brighton fish 'n' chips served up on a glorious beach in Mexico.

Now... 'London's best burger' is a hotly contested subject and deserves a blog post of it's very own.
This mini, juicy, onioney, cheesy, meaty morsel rockets right up the list… safely perching in my Top 5.
According to a Mishkins tweet, the secret is to steam the burger & bun over the onions. The result is a uniquely moist patty, with stringy, gooey cheese and a squidgy bun.
I do love a squidgy bun!

The sharing sized mac 'n' cheese was generally delicious. I really don't have much more to say about this, just try it.

Although this is a 'jewish diner', it's not exactly kosher.
If you're going to fall off the pork wagon, it may as well be with one of Ali's Big Apple Hot Dogs.
"Dragged through the garden" with all the goodies it deserves. (I blogged about Ali a while ago, and while I enjoyed the dog, I much prefer the ones he serves himself. I probably wouldn't have this again.)

Whatever you get, order a side of 'half & half'. A bowl of skin-on fries and the crunchiest onion rings you'll ever try. So big they required two hands, my kinda comfort food!

I've read a few scathing reviews about the service, which to be perfectly honest, seem bizarre. We were greeted by a lovely girl (who stood about as tall as my elbow), and spent the evening being checked on and chatted to, having our drinks topped up and laughing with genuinely lovely staff.
If you're expecting silver service, you're going to be disappointed.
But if you're used to chirpy, nice people doing the best they can on a busy night, you'll fit in fine.
It's worth reserving a table.
For a date ask for the BBC soundbooth at the back (complete with an 'On Air' light up sign for when you need service).
For groups book a booth, they're lovely. Great for 4-6 people.
If you're just passing by, just pop in and ask if you can sit at the bar. There's usually room for a little'un.
We vastly overordered & washed it down with more than a few cocktails & the bill still only came to £75.
If you were sensible, you could very comfortably relax in the £25 a head range.

Christmas Eve Shoot

Today was the annual Christmas Eve shoot.
I'm home in Somerset for the holidays, so I donned my old Barbour, my favourite blue Hunters and my new utter obsession, my Billingham camera bag!

It is the king of camera bags.
I grew up wanting to be a photojournalist and travel to war zones around the world. (Strange kid.)
My all time hero was Don McCullin & when I met him, he signed my treasured copy of his book & said all you need is a scrappy attitude & a Billingham bag
I never forgot it & while my photographic intentions may have faded with the invention of camera phones... my craving for a Billingham didn't.

Kingsdon has always been my family's favourite shoot, a long walk through the blustery woods, followed by a huge roast lunch, cheese & a few too many mince pies.
I love London, but Somerset is the ultimate antidote.
I'm so happy to be home!

Christmas BBMs

...aka Baileys Biscotti Milkshakes!
Believe me when I say, these are the most decadent, delicious, naughty little cocktails you'll ever make.
Perfect for a snuggly night in by the fire, or a great new desert for your dinner party.
We'll be serving ours along side Christmas pudding this year, for those of us who don't like the traditional brandy soaked affair (me).

To make 4 BBMs, you'll need:

6 scoops of good quality vanilla ice-cream,
10 (25mls) shots of Baileys gorgeous new Biscotti flavour,
5 ice cubes (or just a handful),
1 glass of milk,
1 can of whipped cream,
Good quality chocolate for grating.

10 shots sounds like a lot, but remember it's split between 4 people and a standard measure of Baileys in the pub is 50mls.

Scoop all of your ingredients (other than the chocolate) into a blender and give it a good blitz!
When it's well & truly blended, pour your shakes into 4 tall glasses.
Top with whipped cream & shave some chocolate over the top, using a grater or even a peeler.
Serve with a straw and a smile!
If you want some of my candy cane badboys, you can find them here

REMEMBER: Friends don't let friends drink alone!
Happy slurping!

Burger & Lobster, Mayfair

If you've ever dreamed of finishing a glorious meal in Mayfair, sitting back with your champagne & asking the waiter to bring another round of lobsters, I know just the place.
Forget the lottery tickets, you wont have to marry a rich old man (let's face it, no amount of money is worth rubbing suncream into someone's bald patch).
Mayfair has a new kid on the block.
No menus or specials boards, two dishes, the lobster or the burger. £20 each, take your pick.
I'm not talking a skinny little half lobster either, I mean a big, stonking beast of a lobster, dripping with lemon butter and big juicy bacon cheeseburgers in bricoche buns, bursting with flavour.
All washed down with spectacular cocktails & reasonably priced, proper champagne.
The imaginatively named 'Burger & Lobster' on Clarges street feels like a pop up, but fingers crossed, is here to stay.

The decor is... different. Let's just say, if a Swiss chalet & an American diner had a baby & it grew up in Mayfair... it would look like this.
They opened quietly over the weekend & there are no reservations.
My advice?
Get down there sharpish! Go for the grilled lobster & try the cocktails.
It's a great place for a date, dinner with friends or a huge birthday party. You really can't go wrong.
You'll find B&L at:

& on Twitter.

Ps... if you do go, tweet me a picture in your bib! This winter's must have accessory, darling.

Home Made Nutella

This morning I sat down to breakfast with a steaming mug of tea, warm crusty bread and my own jar of delicious home-made Nutella.
The perfect mix of hot, crunchy, smooth & chocolate!
It's so easy to make. You could whip a jar up any time, just for your own enjoyment, or wrap it up and give as a gorgeous home-made gift.
The original inspiration for this recipe came from this wonderful blog.

You'll need:
150grams of hazelnuts
200grams of chocolate (choose milk or dark depending on your preference)
1 cup icing sugar
1/2 cocoa powder
Some vegetable or seed oil
+ a clean jar to keep it in.

Preheat your oven to 180°C or 350°F
Pour your hazelnuts into a baking tray and roast them on the middle shelf for about 10mins.
While your nuts are toasting, break up your chocolate and melt using a bain marie.
Keep and eye on your hazelnuts, once they start to go brown, they're ready. Take them out and leave them to cool a little.
Throw them all into a food processor. If you have a mini processor, that's even better as the finished result will be much smoother. I have this one from Cuisinart and it works like a dream!
If not, just your usual processor is fine, but you may have to stop it now and then and scrape the sides down.
Your nuts should start to look something like this:

Once they do, add your dry ingredients, poor in your melted chocolate and add 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil.
Turn it on and after a few seconds add a little more oil. A couple good glugs should do it, but I'll leave it up to you.
Keep it whizzing for a good 10-15mins to get rid of any lumps.
You want a smooth, molten mixture, not a sort of thick cookie dough.
When you're happy with it, poor your glorious goo into a freshly cleaned jar & seal it up tight. Leave this in the fridge over night, and when you get up in the morning, you'll have the most incredible treat waiting for you!

If you can, take it out of the fridge about half an hour before you want to eat, or microwave it for a few seconds if you like it melty.
Serve with warm french bread & ice cold milk.
Talking of milk, you could easily make dairy free nutella by using dark chocolate or a milk chocolate substitute.
A pretty bow is all it would take to turn your decadent treat into a gorgeous gift.
Nutella for everyone!
